A car was broken into outside my workplace, window smashed and alarm activated. I went out to investigate without hesitation. Only when I returned did my colleagues say they felt unable as they thought they might be suspected of being involved by the police or others. The combination of my whiteness and being middle aged was a simple privilege I did not realise I had.
