107: “I was made to state my subconscious bias...”

On discussing a video of a black man being arrested and multiple police presence recently, I was made to state my subconscious bias and white privilege in the face when I made a generic response to something said. I was called out on it, and initially I felt defensive. Uncomfortable. I was going to react in a knee jerk fashion but then, I stopped. Re-read what I'd written initially, winced and realised that I didn't get it and I was excusing the behaviour rather than being an ally. I changed my thinking and apologised. I am now working on becoming more aware and less blinkered. Open minded and watching out for any bias I have accumulated without realising it. I'm saddened but determined to do much much better and be supportive and stand beside my black neighbours against racism.
