32: “I’m not racist but…”
A relative was renting their property to a Nigerian family. The family were not good tenants – they didn’t pay rent, and left the property in a terrible state. My family members said that they will not rent to Africans again. They had taken one experience of one family, and decided that this family represent 1 billion African people. As a white person, I don’t think I have ever been expected to represent ALL white people, or ALL Europeans. I tried to have a conversation about this, to challenge their ideas – and the response was the typical – “I’m not racist, but…”.
