78: I am not told to go back where I come from…

I am white and of Jewish Eastern European immigrant heritage. Even though my family has not been in the UK for many generations, I have never been told to "go back to the country I came from." White privilege means people accept me as British or English without question. When I engage in political activity to make my country a better place to live and challenge issues of injustice, I have never been told I should be grateful for being here. By contrast I know many people of colour and those of mixed heritage whose families have lived here and served this country for many more generations than mine. Yet they are continually told to "go back home" and when they engage in political activity and public service to make the country a better place and challenge injustice, they are told to stop complaining and that they should be grateful for being allowed to live here.
