58: We got paid differently
I worked in a charity in London that had 3 White woman on the Senior Management Team (SMT) whose white privilege showed in every aspect of their management skills or non skills I should say. I am a white lady who is open to any colour, religion, or political beliefs. I treat people how I would like to be treated and no matter how high you are up the management chain, we are all equal, from the postman to the CEO but that is me. This is my Story. I started working in this charity and got promoted to a higher level, which was great, because I felt that the charity believed in my skills. Alongside me was my only colleague, who just happened to be a black lady, we clicked and we supported each other. We did the same job BUT we got paid differently, £2000 difference. That's when I realised that even though in my eyes we were equal, the SMT did not think like that. I feel that because I supported my colleague, I was bullied and micro-managed the same as her. After 3 years loving my job and working alongside my colleague, my mental health could not take it any more and I had to leave. My colleague left as well and the 3 white privileged SMT are still there doing the same to anybody who is of colour. You ask yourself, why did I not report this? Or why did my colleague not report it? Believe me, we did and things just got worst for us and we had to sign a nondisclosure before we left so we would not report how they treat people. That is my biggest regret, walking away knowing that these people will do it time and time again.
