60: “I have work to do.”

I have work to do. I’ve started being a leader for the Beavers in my son’s Scouting section. All the leaders and all the children are white. I honestly don’t think that most of the parents or leaders have noticed, or if they have, they haven’t said anything about it. We live in a fairly white city in the north of England but it’s still deeply un-representative that there are no children who are not white. We’ll be looking at recruitment for new members shortly and I will challenge the leadership to find ways to diversify our recruitment. We need to look at advertising in different places, making connections in different ways, not just relying on word of mouth. We need to make space and make a concerted effort.
