21: The Home Office
I work in part of London where some of my neighbours have ‘no recourse to public funds.’ They are mainly black and the Home Office’s ‘Hostile Environment’ means that minibuses have turned up at dawn to arrest people. I have written letters to the Home Office on behalf of those whose right to stay has been challenged. I have been to courts at tribunal and appeal level to speak on behalf of people who are being asked to leave. Using my white professional status has built bridges to mainstream UK society in the mind of the court.
