92: “I have always lived with white privilege and so I don't notice it.”
I have always lived with white privilege and so I don't notice it. I just assume it. I remember the first time I was challenged about it. I was a student journalist and a fellow student who was black had just got a place on the BBC training scheme. She told us the BBC was trying to increase diversity. We talked about race - and she said the problem was that however well you did in life someone could always throw back at you that you were black. It was likely living with a permanent vulnerability that you couldn't change. I said wasn't that the same as being a woman - and she was angry and told me I didn't understand. Of course I didn't understand because I was white and had never had to think about the colour of my skin. No one was ever going to accuse me of doing something wrong or blame me for not succeeding because I was white!
