37: Awareness of difference

Travelling with a film crew in a van through villages in Jamaica, small children would point at us and shout “Whitey! Whitey! Whitey!” It was a salutary experience for the first time in my life to be an object of curiosity on account of the colour of my skin; but I didn’t begin to judge those children. An awareness of difference is an ocean way from disdain at the difference of others.
